Following the death of my father in 2015, I took some time to travel through Europe (learning to gild whilst in Italy) and Asia. I was earning an income doing contract media analysis work that I could complete remotely, and took on some projects to help fund the trip. Whilst in India my laptop broke down and I had to urgently find a replacement on a tight budget, in the end purchasing an entry-level Lenovo IdeaPad, which saved the day.
Returning to Australia, this computer ended up being my workhorse for the next few years, helping me to execute much of the planning around re-establishing my art practice. It was eventually retired and spent a decent period gathering dust in a drawer; in 2023 I decided I would honour the role it played during a challenging period of my life, by immortalising it in gold leaf.
In a world of ubiquitous and forever-advancing technology, this laptop was destined to fade into obscurity, nondescript to most but forever having provided value to me. I was interested in how a layer of gold would change how others perceive such a device, when given a second lease of life as a found object sculpture.
