This work was a spontaneous and circumstantial decision; my brother-in-law left several cans of beer at my house, following a trip to Sydney with my sister. Not being able to drink them (being gluten intolerant) they just sat in the fridge taking up space, until I decided to make one into an artwork.
One of my objectives for this body of work is to explore the concepts of consumption and value. A humble aluminium can is a low-cost, mass-produced ubiquitous object, valued for its practicality as a container but far less than the product it contains. Whilst low cost and recyclable, mining new aluminium is an intensive process, and many used cans continue to end up in landfill.

I wanted to explore how a layer of gold leaf (creating the illusion of a solid gold object) changes a mass-produced container’s real and perceived value, whilst also asking if such an artwork is a celebration or a criticism of the products we make and how we consume. And where does art, as a product, sit in this conversation?
