This work is the oldest in the Manifest series; it was initially a study undertaken in 2017, to help hone the gilding skills I had learnt in Italy the previous year. Upon completion it was relegated to a box of my art materials until 2023, when I decided it would actually complement the other works in the series. The initial gold layer was a bit worse for wear from storage, so it received a new layer to rejuvenate. I decided to include this work in the series to contrast the more threatening qualities of both Article I and Article V.

I originally chose a Little Penguin as they are endemic to New Zealand and Australia, so it felt it was somewhat symbolic of the Australasian identity and also my personal story (having grown up in the former, but now living in the latter country). There are two distinct Little Penguin species; Eudyptula minor from New Zealand and Eudyptula novaehollandiae, which is found primarily in Australia. Both share a range of aspects in character, appearance and behaviour, however they also have several differences. To me this created an interesting metaphor for the shared charateristics and key distinctions between both countries.
