Similar to Article I, this work is an exploration on how a powerful, ominous object is perceived, when covered in gold leaf (presenting the illusion of solid gold). In this instance, I was drawn to the simplistic design and practicality of a sledgehammer, and its destructive mechanism. I also wanted to explore both the positive and negative symbolism associated with this tool; power, strength, violence, fear, breaking apart or breaking through.
Whilst I still intend this work to evoke social commentary, I see it as primarily an introspection. Re-establishing my art career has been a drawn out and difficult journey, which has had considerable impact on my mental health and wellbeing. There have been many positive moments throughout, and ambition, self-belief and determination have always helped drive me forward. However, there have been countless hours of stress, doubt, worry, pressure, despondency, frustration and apathy intertwined. For a long time my goal has felt like an impossible dream and there is now an immense relief that I can finally share this new series of artworks.
From my lived experience, I hope this particular work encourages mental health dialogue, particularly on how not feeding creativity adequately, nor being able to pursue a passion, can impact an individual (aspects I feel are often lacking in the wider metal health conversation).
